YouTube requires all creators to specify whether their content is made for kids or not. If your channel is currently set to "Made for Kids" but you want to switch it to standard (not made for kids) content, this guide will walk you through the process step by step.
Understanding the "Made for Kids" Setting
When videos are marked as "Made for Kids," YouTube disables certain features to comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). This includes:
- Comments sections
- Personalized ads (which reduces revenue)
- Notifications
- End screens and cards
- Live chat
- Save to playlist options
Changing to standard videos restores these features.
Changing Your Channel Setting (Recommended)
The easiest way is to change your entire channel's audience setting, which applies to all existing and future videos.
- Sign in to YouTube Studio by going to studio.youtube.com
- Click Settings (the gear icon) on the left menu
- Click Channel from the Settings menu
- Click the Advanced Settings tab at the top
- Under Audience, select "No, set this channel as not made for kids. I almost never upload content that's made for kids."
- Click SAVE to apply the changes
This will change all your existing videos and set the default for future uploads to standard (not made for kids) content.
Changing Individual Videos
If you only want to change specific videos rather than your entire channel:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio at studio.youtube.com
- Click Content from the left menu
- Check the boxes next to the videos you want to change (or check the box at the top to select all videos)
- Click Edit in the black bar that appears
- Select Audience from the dropdown menu
- Choose "No, it's not 'Made for Kids"
- Click UPDATE VIDEOS to save your changes
Important Things to Know
- YouTube may use automated systems to verify your settings, and incorrect classification could result in penalties
- If you're unsure whether your content qualifies as "made for kids," consult YouTube's guidelines or legal counsel
- Changes take effect immediately for all selected videos
Need More Help?
