How to Use Google Drive on Your Computer and Phone

Google Drive lets you keep your files safe online and open them from almost any device. These steps will help you get started without any technical knowledge.

Getting started on a computer

  1. Open a web browser (like Chrome, Edge, or Firefox) on your computer.​
  2. In the address bar at the top, type drive.google.com and press Enter.​
  3. Sign in with your Google account email and password, or create a new account if you do not have one.​
  4. After you sign in, you will see your main Drive screen, with a list of files in the center and folders on the left side.

Adding files and folders on a computer

  1. On the left side, click the New button.
  2. To add a file (like a photo or document) from your computer, click File upload, then choose the file and click Open
  3. To add a whole folder, click Folder upload, pick the folder, and confirm
  4. To make a new blank document, click New, then choose Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides.

Opening, organizing, and sharing on a computer​

  1. To open something, just click its name once; it will open in a new tab.
  2. To rename a file or folder, right‑click its name and choose Rename, then type a new name and click OK.
  3. To move a file into a folder, drag it onto the folder on the left, or right‑click the file, choose Move to, pick a folder, and click Move.
  4. To share a file, right‑click it and select Share, type the person’s email, choose whether they can view or edit, then click Send.

Using Google Drive on a phone or tablet

  1. On your Android phone or iPhone, open the app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store)
  2. Search for Google Drive and install the app.
  3. Open the Drive app and sign in with the same Google account you use on your computer.
  4. You will see your files and folders, similar to what you see on the computer, in a simple list.

Adding and using files on a phone

  1. To add a file from your phone, tap the + button, then tap Upload, choose your photo, video, or document, and confirm.
  2. To create a new document, tap + and choose Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides, then start typing.
  3. To move a file, tap the three dots next to its name, tap Move, pick a folder, and tap Move again.
  4. To share a file, tap the three dots next to it, tap Share, enter an email address, choose view or edit, and tap Send.
  5. To download a file to your phone for offline use, tap the three dots next to it and choose Download.

With these simple steps, you can store important files in Google Drive once and reach them from both your computer and your mobile device whenever you need them.
